How to Send Your Color Ad

While Man at Arms offers free design and color separation services, many advertisers choose to provide the work themselves. While we are very flexible and can accept ads in many different formats, here are some guidelines that will give you the best results with the least effort and cost.

~ The easiest way to send your ad is as a very high resolution image (including the type and everything) in EPS, PDF, TIFF or Photoshop format. The resolution should be at least 300 dpi for halftones and 1200 dpi for line art if you want the crispest reproduction possible. The ad can be sent to us on a CD or DVD. If you cannot send a disk, and need to supply your ad as an e-mail attachment, please call us first for a special e-mail address. Remember to keep your type at least 1/4" away from the edge of the magazine. For full-page ads, it is very important that the size of your document be exactly 8.125" wide and 10.875" tall. For full-page ads that print over the edge of the paper, be sure to include the necessary .125" "bleed." Do not include the bleed as part of the document size, but simply have it hang over the edge on all four sides. Make sure that there are no spot colors used in your document - all colors and color images should be in CMYK format (not RGB). If you have questions about file preparation, call us (800.999.4697) and we will be happy to walk you through it. Lastly, please also include a printout for our reference. For additional instructions on supplying files in PDF format, see below.

~ For PDF files, please use professional-grade software, such as Acrobat Distiller or Agfa Apogee, rather than shareware. If you are not experienced with this software, it is best to use other formats. Make sure that the software is configured to create publication-quality files and not low-resolution PDFs for internet or other use. Be sure to choose "include all fonts," and adjust the bleed setting to .25".

~ Another good way to send your ad is as a layout in Quark Express for the Macintosh. All photographic images should be in TIFF or Photoshop format at about 300 dpi, and any line art (such as logos) should be at about 1200 dpi. Please remember to include copies of all the fonts that are needed to print the job, and don't forget the screen fonts if it is a type format that requires them. Also send a printout of the ad for our reference, so we will know how it should look.

~ While it is generally best to send your ad digitally, as described above, we can also accept negative film. Recommended specifications are 150 line screen, 2400 dpi, right reading, emulsion down. Please make your sizes exact (dimensions are provided on our rate card) and include bleed if necessary. On bleeding ads, type should be at least 1/4" away from the trim. Including a color proof is highly recommended.
